THE WORK

HOME NODE is a screen-free smart home companion that interacts through voice, touch and ambient light. As the number of connected devices in the home grows and control points become increasingly fragmented, the design organises everyday interaction around familiar scenarios such as Morning, Focus and Sleep. Short voice commands or direct touch can coordinate multiple devices at once, reducing repeated app switching and the need to look at a screen. The product is guided by the idea of invisible intelligence. Its formal language—rounded shoulders, a tapered waist and continuous curves—is derived from a pebble softened over time by natural forces. At 130 × 130 × 180 mm, it sits quietly on a living-room sideboard, bedside table or desk. The top interface tilts forward by 10 degrees to suggest the direction of use. A fixed touch centre and an independently rotating outer ring create a clear division of controls, while tactile feedback makes touch and adjustment physically perceptible. Sense, connect and respond define the interaction logic. Human presence, ambient light, temperature, humidity and voice input act as triggers for coordinated scenes involving lighting, air conditioning, air-quality devices and water appliances. A Good Night command activates the sleep scenario and receives a low, warm-light response. In Focus mode, feedback remains brief and restrained so that it does not interrupt the user’s activity. Soft-white status light, warm sleep light and subtle pulse notifications form a screen-free visual language. The material zoning corresponds directly to function. A warm-white ceramic upper shell provides a tactile interface; a translucent mist-white polycarbonate layer diffuses status light; sand-grey acoustic fabric wraps the sound zone; and a natural-silver anodised-aluminium base provides structural support. The four materials create a continuous vertical hierarchy, integrating sensing, interaction, acoustics and support within a unified appearance. Internally, the touch controls, light source, microphones, main controller and wireless communication, speaker and independent acoustic chamber are arranged as distinct functional zones, aligning the external expression with the hardware structure. HOME NODE places domestic interaction within the rhythm of everyday life. Through accessible physical controls and low-interruption ambient feedback, it provides one shared entry point for dispersed smart devices, allowing people to understand and adjust the state of their surroundings without breaking the flow of living.

EDITORIAL REVIEW

QUARTERLY BEST

HOME NODE offers a thoughtful response to the growing fragmentation of domestic smart-device interfaces. Its screen-free interaction model is clearly structured, and the combination of touch, rotation, voice and ambient light creates a calm, low-interruption experience. The product’s soft geometry, disciplined material zoning and correspondence between external form and internal hardware demonstrate a mature industrial-design approach. Particularly strong is the way scenarios, feedback and physical controls are integrated into a coherent object that can remain quietly present in everyday interiors.
